Lankesh was a senior journalist who was vocal against right-wing parties in Karnataka. She frequently wrote columns for local newspapers and was the editor of a weekly Kannada magazine ‘Gauri Lankesh Patrike’.

In 2016, Lankesh was convicted for defamation for writing an article claiming three BJP leaders had duped a jeweller of Rs 1 lakh.

Journalists and prominent personalities from across the spectrum, including Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah have condemned her murder. Siddaramaiah tweeted saying not only had Karnataka lost a progressive voice, but he had lost a friend.
