A fire broke out inside a mosque at Ratanpura village in Rampur district of Uttar Pradesh, leading to protests by the villagers who demanded action against culprits, the Indian Express reported on Saturday, 16 February.

"Locals spotted smoke coming out from the building and saw religious books and a floor mat engulfed in the flames,” Azeemnagar SHO Rajeev Chowdhary told the IE.

According to the report, protests were called off after the police assured action against the miscreants who had allegedly set the place on fire.

An FIR was lodged against unidentified persons under Section 436 of the Indian Penal Code, the SHO reportedly said.

“The situation is under control. A probe is on,” the report quoted Rampur Superintendent of Police Shiv Hari Meena as saying.
