The family of the deceased 19-year-old boy, who was the prime accused in the rape and murder of a 15-year-old Dalit girl in Jind, Haryana has alleged that they were tortured by the police, according to ANI.

The boy’s brothers, father and uncle were detained and allegedly beaten up, with the police forcing their heads into ice-cold water after their hands were bound, and in one case even electrocuting their private parts, the report adds.

The victim’s family had listed the boy’s name in the FIR that they had lodged with the police when the girl first disappeared on 9 January. As a result, he was considered the prime suspect in the case and his family members were detained.

Only after the police found the boy’s decomposed body in a nearby canal on Wednesday, did they release his family members so that they could attend the cremation. The victim’s family, however, has not been detained as of yet, reports Hindustan Times.

According to the Hindustan Times report, the boy’s younger brother, who is a minor, was ruthlessly stripped and beaten by the police, when they took him in for ‘investigation’.

They took me to Kurukshetra and stripped me. My hands were tied and they forced my head into a tub of water. They rolled an iron pipe over my legs with one policeman standing on either side.

Another brother, a cousin this time, claimed that electric shocks were given to his private parts, the report adds. The boy’s father and uncle too were not spared by the police and have complained that inhuman treatment was meted out to them.

The water was ice-cold when my head was forced into it. A policeman then sat on my back. I thought I would die... I felt most hopeless when they tortured my son...

According to ANI, the boy’s body, that had been sent for a post-mortem, did not have any injuries marks on it. The cause of his death remains unknown.

It is too early to determine the cause of death. We have 12 teams who are looking into the matter of the girl and the boy. Postmortem is underway.

The 15-year-old victim disappeared from her home in Jind on 9 January, after she had left her house to go for her tuition classes. Her family reportedly visited the police station the same day and lodged a complaint. Her body was found a few days later near a canal in Jind. According to a postmortem report, she had been sexually assaulted by more than one person and gruesomely tortured, to the extent that her liver had been ruptured.
