In a move to push the long-stalled faculty recruitment process, Delhi University (DU) has asked its colleges to shortlist candidates for appointment as Assistant Professor.

In a letter to the principals of several colleges on 15 December, the university asked them to complete the task of "scrutinising/shortlisting of candidates at the college level" as per the guidelines issued by it on 5 April this year.

The letter, signed by the Assistant Registrar of the university, said that a "pre-screening" of the candidates had already been done by the varsity through a "Central Screening Committee" and the onus was now on the colleges to do the scrutiny with their respective screening committees.

Thousands of posts remain to be filled with permanent faculties across the Delhi University colleges, most of which are occupied by ad-hoc teachers whose term is extended every four months after an interview.

Union Human Resource Development Prakash Javadekar had earlier this year informed the Parliament that there were 9,000 permanent teachers’ posts vacant in the Delhi University, and that the ministry would fill those seats within a span of one year.

In the university’s 94th annual convocate Javadekar and President Ramnath Kovind had stressed the need to fill up the vacancies in 41 departments, such as — zoology, statistics, Philosophy, Mathematics, Linguistics, Plant Molecular Biology, Electronic Science and Hindi, Hindustan Times reported.

More than 50 DU colleges have advertised positions of Assistant Professor for various subjects. The colleges had last initiated the process of appointing teachers in 2015.
