Kejriwal Threatens to Go on Hunger Strike Over Delhi Sealing Drive

In a fresh attack on the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) over its ongoing sealing drive, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Friday, 9 March, said that he will hold a hunger strike if a logical and permanent solution is not reached in the matter by 31 March.

The Chief Minister’s statement comes after the Delhi Police was accused of manhandling and beating protesting traders in Amar Colony on Thursday, 8 March.

The Chief Minister also wrote to PM Narendra Modi and Congress president Rahul Gandhi asking for a law to be made on the issue, also seeks meeting time from the two leaders.

Kejriwal, while addressing traders in Amar Colony on Friday, said that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) will pressurise the central government over the issue.

Traders are getting harassed because of the sealing drive. This issue is not related to a particular party. If the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP), Congress and AAP together boycott the Parliament for two days, the sealing drive will stop within 24 hours.

“I met many traders and spoke to them about the issue. A change in necessary in the master plan. Many laws need to be changed. Ordinance is the only possible solution to the sealing drive,” he added

According to a report by The Indian Express, over 400 shops were sealed in Amar Colony on Thursday, 8 March, by the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC).

AAP MLA Sanjay Singh also addressed the traders, saying that the party will raise the issue in the Parliament on Monday, 12 March.
