A day after Delhi cops lathicharged a tempo driver, who allegedly attacked their colleague with a sword, CM Arvind Kejriwal and other leaders condemned the police’s “brutality”, on Monday, 17 June.
A cop was reportedly injured in an altercation with a 'Gramin Seva' tempo driver after his vehicle collided with a police van in Mukherjee Nagar area of northwest Delhi.
So far, three policemen have been suspended for “unprofessional conduct”.
‘Police Brutality in Mukherjee Nagar Condemnanble, Unjustified’
Condemning the “police brutality”, Kejriwal on Monday demanded an impartial investigation into the incident and strict against against the guilty.
“Protectors of citizens can't be allowed to turn into uncontrolled violent mobsters,” he wrote in a tweet.
Manjinder Singh Sirsa, BJP MLA from Rajouri Garden in Delhi, said the policemen insulted the Sikh man by attacking his turban.
“Which law under the constitution gives the Delhi police the right to beat an innocent man with lathis? The man pulled out the sword in self defence, not to attack anyone,” Sirsa, member of the Shiromani Akali Dal, said.
‘Busy Doing Commentary’: Sisodia Takes a Dig at Gambhir
Meanwhile, Delhi Deputy CM Manish Sisodia lashed out at Bharatiya Janata Party MP from East Delhi, Gautam Gambhir, saying “his party’s police is dragging the common man on the streets and that the cricketer-turned politician is nowhere to be seen”.
“Is anyone willing to take the responsibility (of the incident) or are they going to be busy earning money by way of commentary, till next elections?” Sisodia tweeted.
“This incident clearly shows the kind of monsters Delhi Police officers are,” Ankit Lal, Social Media & IT strategist, Aam Aadmi Party, said.
“Zero accountability towards the citizens or elected representatives of Delhi,” Lal tweeted.
‘Delhi Police Acted like Organised Goons’
Satyendar Jain, Minister of Health in the Delhi government, said the “Delhi Police acted like organised goons or lynch-men.
"No law permits beating and intentional insult to a religion and that too by law protector and implementors," AAP leader Somnath Bharti wrote in a tweet.
Delhi Police a ‘Real Disgrace’
Delhi police is a “real disgrace”, Tejinderpal Singh, Provincial secretary at YNC Jammu, wrote as he posted a video of the incident on Twitter.
AAP’s Sanjay Singh also condemned the incident, saying “Delhi police, which is responsible for ensuring safety and security of it citizens, has become danger to them instead.”
Further legal action will be taken after an inquiry is conducted by the deputy commissioner of police (northwest) and the additional DCP and ACP of Mukherjee Nagar, news agency PTI reported on Monday, quoting an official.
