The Delhi police on Tuesday arrested a 67-year-old madarsa teacher in west Delhi’s Narela area for allegedly raping a 9-year-old girl. The accused was arrested on Tuesday night.

According to a report in The Financial Express, the girl is currently undergoing treatment at BR Ambedkar hospital in Rohini, and doctors have stated that her condition is stable, although she remains traumatised.

Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) chief Swati Maliwal tweeted:

Maliwal, incidentally, has launched a nationwide ‘Rape Roko’ campaign, after an 8-month-old baby was raped in the capital on 28 January, allegedly by her own 28-year-old cousin. Her campaign demands death penalty for those found guilty of raping minors.

In the Narela incident, a case has been registered against the 67-year-old madrasa teacher under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012.

According to a report in The Hindu, the teacher – identified as Zakhir Alam – was arrested after the girl’s parents made a call to the cops late on Tuesday night. The report stated that Alam had allegedly raped her on 25 February and threatened her with dire consequences if she tried to go the police.

It was only on 26 February, when the girl lost consciousness and was taken to the hospital, that the doctors examined her and told her parents that she had been sexually assaulted. The girl then told her mother about the incident, and a complaint was filed.

According to, Alam has been an Arabic language teacher at the madras for several years. A probe is underway to investigate whether the girl was raped in the madras’a premises.
