Dalit students in Telangana may have access to an exclusive university for them in the next academic session starting 2018, said a Hindustan Times report.

Telangana Social Welfare Residential Educational Institutions Society (TSWREIS) discussed the proposal with Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao, who has “appreciated the idea”.

“The modalities are being worked out and if everything goes as per the plan, we are likely to start the university by 2018-19 academic year,” TSWREIS Secretary RS Praveen Kumar told HT.

The institution will be part of the state’s policy of giving free access to students from weaker sections from kindergarten to postgraduate level.

The report said that it will be the “first of its kind” university for Dalits and according to Kumar, they have access to comprehensive education.

TSWREIS has 39 play schools and 268 residential institutions for Dalit students from Class V to under-graduate level.

“In the next step, we want to groom them as postgraduates by establishing our own university. Thus, we want to empower our students with higher education so that they face any challenges in the world and compete with any other social groups
Kumar told HT
