Thirty-six cows have died over two days in a gaushala in the Chhawla area of south-western Delhi, according to reports from ANI on Friday, 27 July. The incident is being investigated by a team of police and veterinary doctors at the scene.
According to News18, the cops suspect that the cows have died due to the outbreak of “some disease.”
In an official statement, the Delhi Police has said it will wait for the veterinarians to conduct a post-mortem on each of the 36 dead cows before it takes further legal action against any parties involved.
Although the investigation is still ongoing, the Delhi government has set up an enquiry and demanded a report on the deaths of the cows within 24 hours.
Meanwhile, a worker at the gaushala claimed helplessness in protecting the bovines, saying, “(the) water motor hasn't been working for past 2 days. No one listens to us. We try to do our best but no doctor is available for the cows.”
According to reports by The Indian Express, the shelter had been served multiple notices by the animal husbandry department over alleged violations.

The land for the 20-acre gaushala was allotted in the year 1995. When the local police visited the Gaushala, there were about 1400 cows sheltered there, out of which 36 were found dead.
A senior MCD officials told The Indian Express, “We had written to the Delhi government several times to open more cow shelters as the existing ones were full. Only one of the five gaushalas has the space to accommodate more cows.”
