Country’s first Nirbhaya centre (rape crisis centre) will come up at Chhattisgarh’s capital Raipur. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to inaugurate the centre in the second week of July, as reported by Indiatoday.
The government had earlier announced to set up atleast 660 rape crisis centres across the country named as Nirbhaya Centres, as a tribute to the victim of December 16, 2012 Delhi gang-rape case.
However, the NDA government later decided to trim the plan for a rape crisis centre in every district. The government will now establish one centre in every state or Union Territory. The budget for the project has been slashed from Rs 244.48 crore to Rs 18 crore.
