A day after Delhi's Patiala House court convicted two persons for the killing of Avtar Singh and Hardev Singh during the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, a scuffle broke out between the accused and Akali Dal MLA Manjinder Singh Sirsa inside the court’s premises, on the sidelines of the court pronouncing the quantum of sentence.

On 14 November, Additional Sessions Judge Ajay Pandey held Naresh Sherawat and Yashpal Singh guilty of killing the duo in Mahipalpur area of south Delhi during the riots in 1984.

The court held both the accused guilty under various sections including 302 (murder), 307 (attempt to murder), 395 (dacoity) and 324 (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means) of the Indian Penal Code.

Following the attack, Sirsa alleged that he slapped one of the convicts after being “provoked.”

“They were raising slogans that they will make us remember 1984 riots,” Sirsa said after slapping a convict in Delhi's Patiala House Court. While reiterating the incident, Sirsa also added that the two convicts killed innocent people in 1984 and are still freely walking around as goons.

The attack was condemned by lawyer and former AAP MLA HS Phoolka on Twitter, stating: “ Strongly condemn attack on accused in Court premises at Patiala House Court.”
