Two groups of students in the Banaras Hindu University (BHU) clashed inside the campus on Sunday, 24 February.
The altercation took place amid the university’s ongoing cultural fest Spandan, between inmates of two hostels – Birla A and C. Both the hostels belong to Arts faculty students.
Speaking to The Quint, a student of the university said that the trouble started brewing at the Pandit Onkarnath Auditorium where, during the staging of a play, few outsiders assaulted some students.
“The altercation then broke out as hostellers of Birla A and C hostels came face-to-face. Stones and petrol bombs were hurled from both the sides,” the student said.
“The administration and police soon intervened and the matter was de-escalated,” he added.
A Times of India report quoted SP City Dinesh Kumar Singh as saying that students of two hostels had clashed on campus but situation was brought under control now. He said that police force was still deployed on campus to avoid recurrence of any untoward incident.
Four injured students have been admitted to the trauma centre of BHU, the report also said.
