Students of the Chennai’s Stanley Medical College held a sit-in protest at the campus premises on 17 June, after a member of a patient’s family allegedly slapped a medical intern.
The protesters said the intern was slapped by disgruntled relatives of a patient at around 1:30 am on 17 June, and have been demanding that additional security be deployed in the wards before they resume work. The doctors said that they performed emergency medical care, but boycotted ward work for the day. The protest was suspended after the Dean of the college vowed to deploy more guards and recruit more security personnel by 18 June.
The resident medical officer was informed and a complaint was filed at the local police station, the protesters said.
“The person who slapped the doctor has been taken in by the police,” a post-graduate students at the college told The Quint.
Protesters Demand
The demands include:
- A security guard in each ward.
- Separate duty rooms for male and female interns and post-graduate students, with a cot, attached bathrooms, and a security guard each.
A student told The Quint that they have given the management time till Friday (22 June) to meet their demands.
