The Central government this month sent a second-letter to all states seeking their feedback on its notification banning the sale and purchase of cattle for slaughter. The first letter was sent to the states immediately after the Supreme Court stayed the ban in July.
Some states have already responded to the first letter, the Centre drafted a new letter reminding others to revert, said a report in The Indian Express.
After the Centre's notification, outrage sparked across several states in India. The Centre now has decided to seek feedback from the States on it May 15 order.
Environment Minister Harsh Vardhan had earlier said the ban “did not intend to directly or indirectly affect the slaughterhouses or harm farmers,” or “influence the food habits of the people,” reported The Indian Express.
Along with the letter is a copy of the notification on which states have been asked to send suggestions. A new draft notification will be framed, based on the feedback from states, after which it will be available for public consultation.An official in the Ministry, reported The Indian Express.
The notification had received flak from various state governments such as Kerala, West Bengal and Meghalaya who said the order interfered with the states’ jurisdiction. The Madras High Court, however, had granted an interim stay on the ban of cattle trade which the apex court upheld and extended it to the entire country.
