After Bengaluru’s Varthur lake was seen bubbling over, it seems the Ulsoor lake is stepping towards a slow death.
Watch this video.
Recyclable and non- recyclable waste can be seen floating on the edges of this iconic lake, making for a rather gross view. Just the entrance of the lake there hangs a notice board by the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) urging visitors to “Help us WAKE the LAKE” by not littering and throwing plastic.
But a cursory glance at the lake shows that BBMP does not believe in practising what it preaches. Name an object and you are sure to find it in the lake: be it a toothbrush, shoes, football, thermocol, or plastic wrappers — and the range truly crosses borders with Indian and multi-national brands topping the waste chart.
Ironically, a sewage line messing with the lake is located right next to a BBMP office. The sewage line is choked with garbage and it seems quite likely that during rains this would flow into the lake.
The workers at the lake say that the garbage collected from the lake is dumped in Rampura. It so happens that Rampura has a lake which is unfortunately being converted to a dump-yard-in-making.
Besides the garbage flowing in from the sewage line, plastic wrappers can also be seen floating at the boat club entrance. Evidently this is symptomatic of careless visitors who need to made more aware of the environmental hazards of littering in the lake.
