BJP leader and chairman of the Public Health Committee in the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) Bharat Singh Tokas wants all slaughterhouses in RK Puram and Rangpuri Pahari to be sealed, reported The Indian Express. In a letter written to Lieutenant Governor (L-G) Anil Baijal he said that the slaughterhouses in the mentioned areas ought to be sealed lest it leads to plane crashes, reported Express.

In Indira Market, Ekta Vihar, there are many illegal meat houses and dhabas operating and shop owners throw waste meat in nearby drains. This is the main cause of increasing bird activities in the area, which can result in air crash and many people may lose their lives.

“Similarly, in Rangpuri Pahari, there are illegal meat shops, animals are de-skinned, and there is waste dumping due to which lot of waste meat is generated. This area is close to the domestic airport,” he further added, as per TIE report.

Tokas is also the Munirka councillor.

I have written a letter to the L-G because the MCD can only issue challans and not get them evicted as DDA is the land owning authority.

Tokas also submitted a copy of the minutes of a meeting of the Airfield Environment Management committee in which Delhi International Airport Limited had alerted the issue of dumping meat and illegal meat shops in certain areas of South Delhi. According to TIE report, DIAL had also suggested ‘action points’ and had urged the government agencies including the SDMC, the DDA and the Delhi Police to respond.

The Indian Express report stated that the status report obtained for Rangpuri Pahari had showed accumulated sewage water left open attracts birds while the report from RK Puram stated that “no covered bins or dhalaos have been provided”.

“There has been no action by the DDA despite the meeting, so I have requested the L-G to take action. There are several eagles in these areas now,” Tokas told TIE.
