1. Exit Polls With False Numbers Being Used by BJP to Lure Regional Players: Kumaraswamy

Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy questioned the credibility of the exit polls and EVMs in a series of tweets on Monday afternoon.

The CM said the exit poll results were released on Sunday evening only “reiterated the serious concern of the Opposition parties on misuse of vulnerable EVMs for electoral gains by the ruling party.“ Interestingly, he claimed that the false impression of a Modi wave was being painted to lure regional parties to the BJP fold.

In the last of these tweets, he also tagged opposition leaders across the country, where he said that the exit poll exercise was “an effort to create a false impression of a wave in favour of one particular leader and the party”.

The exit poll predictions for the Lok Sabha election results in Karnataka have presented an unprecedented scenario in the state. Most of the polls have given the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) a landslide victory in the state, with the CVoter survey predicting the least number of seats – 18 seats – for the BJP, which is considered a big mandate.

For the 28 seats in Karnataka, Today’s Chanakya and Ipsos gave the BJP 21-23 seats and Axis has given 21-25. These polls predicted the Congress-JD(S) combine winning 6 seats or less. The Nielsen poll predicts 15 seats for NDA and 13 for UPA. CVoter has given 18 to NDA and 9 to UPA.

But, the predictions showing the BJP winning up to 25 seats have come as a surprise because the internal survey of the BJP had only predicted 22 seats for the party, a number quoted often by the BJP state president BS Yeddyurappa.

3. Probe Into Source of Explosive Material in B’luru Blast Begins

Latest Bengaluru news updates.

The Vyalikaval police have began a probe to ascertain the source of the highly inflammable chemical which exploded, killing 57-year-old Venkatesh on the spot in front of Rajarajeshwari Nagar MLA Munirathna’s house on Sunday morning.

The police are waiting for the FSL report. A senior police officer said it appears to be a case of accidental death as Venkatesh was carrying the can containing Methyl Ethyl Ketone Peroxide (MEKP), a highly explosive material.

The officer said, “We are verifying the source of the chemical. There is no clarity on whether the can was abandoned by someone or Venkatesh had brought it from Jinke park in Chamarajpet in connection with his work, as he is a dhobi and had started a granite business recently. So far, we have not booked anyone in connection with the incident. Once we get a report from the FSL, the exact cause of the explosion would be revealed.”

The city police have unearthed a fake visa racket after a 34-year-old electrician from Tamil Nadu was arrested by immigration officials after he landed at the Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) from Kuala Lumpur with fake Canadian visa on Saturday.

The accused, identified as Tamilselvan, was handed over to the BIAL police, who booked him under forgery and cheating. He was later produced before the magistrate and remanded in judicial custody.

The police said they have sent a letter to their Malaysian counterparts to deport four others who are said to be in Kuala Lumpur and also involved in the fake visa racket. During the interrogation, Tamilselvan claimed that he was working as an electrician in Canada for British Petroleum for the past two years and returned home on vacation.

5. PU Colleges not Publishing Cut-off Percentage, Allege Parents, Students

As the race for seats in colleges picks up, allegations of some pre-university (PU) colleges not publishing the cut-off percentage have surfaced, with students and parents complaining about the lack of transparency in admissions.

Students and parents alleged that some colleges were publishing the list of students who are eligible for admissions without putting their names or cut off percentages, while some others were admitting students on a first come first served basis and admitting students who score more than a fixed percentage.

Veena K., whose son secured 89.9% in the Class 10 examination, said she had filed a complaint with the department after learning that a college that is located in central Bengaluru had not published cut-off percentages.
