1. Infant Smothered to Death Over Family Dispute, say Cops
In a shocking incident, a 29-day-old infant was smothered to death at a house in North Street near Neelasandra on Friday, 21 December, evening. Ashok Nagar police have detained the father, grandfather and uncle of the deceased baby for further interrogation.
The detained have been identified as C Karthik, 35 (father), Aravind 32, (uncle) and Chittar Raj, 64 (grandfather). The baby was found murdered and hidden under an iron cot along with toys.
The police, meanwhile, suspect that the infant was killed over a family dispute. The autopsy report confirmed that the baby was killed by strangulation, which made the police suspicious of a murder. However, the infant’s father, Karthik, filed a complaint suspecting his own father, Chittar Raj, a retired army man, and his younger brother, Aravind, who works as a labourer in HAL.

2. Ramesh Jarkiholi, Dropped From Cabinet, Threatens to Quit Cong
A day after he was dropped from the H D Kumaraswamy ministry, senior Congress MLA and Belagavi strongman Ramesh L Jarkiholi on Sunday, 23 December, threatened to quit the party. Several other party MLAs, including Ramalinga Reddy, sulked over denial of a cabinet berth.
Ramesh, in a purported telephonic conversation with a TV news channel reporter in Belagavi, said he would quit as MLA “anytime now”. Asked if other Congress MLAs would follow suit, he said: “I won’t disclose the number now. Wait for a week.”
He told reporters at Gokak Falls that he had been planning to quit for three months. My next step will be good for the people of Belagavi district and the state,” Ramesh told reporters. Sources said Mahesh Kamatalli (Athani) and Srimanth Patil (Kagawad) may follow Ramesh, who helped them win the assembly elections. Congress MLC Vivekrao Patil may also quit.

3. Mysuru City’s First Flyover Thrown Open to Traffic
The grade separator at Mysuru-Hunsur Road and Outer Ring Road, which is also the first flyover in Mysuru city, was formally inaugurated on Sunday, 23 December.
The 580-metre-long flyover was declared open by Minister for Higher Education G T Deve Gowda, who is also in-charge of Mysuru district, in the presence of Pratap Simha, MP, and L Nagendra, MLA.
The project for construction of the grade separator at the Mysuru-Hunsur road junction with Outer Ring Road was taken up after the intersection saw increase in traffic. Work on the project, which received its approval under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission, began in June 2016.

4. Two Held for Flying Drone in HAL
The HAL police detained two people for illegally flying a drone in the old airport premises. The duo were using a drone to capture video of an apartment belonging to Prestige Group, in HAL’s surrounding area on 15 December. The detained have been identified as Syed (24) and Bharath (28), both residents of Whitefield, working for a private advertising company.
Krishna Naik, chief manager, HAL Helicopter Division, filed a complaint on Thursday before the police, stating that, Hari Nair, a pilot, was flying a helicopter on 15 December for testing purposes. “Around 1.30 pm, some unknown persons were flying a drone in the area, which was detected by the radar. It could have posed a threat to the pilot’s life. Even after knowing that this may cause harm, the miscreants were flying the drone,” the complaint said.

5. Ban New Year Celebrations in Bengaluru: Hindu Outfit Writes to Police
A right-wing Hindu outfit has appealed to police to ban new year celebrations at the city's signature locations like MG Road and Brigade Road on 31 December to "protect the sanctity of Bengaluru."
In a two-page memorandum to Bengaluru police Commissioner T Suneel Kumar, Hindu Janajagruti Samiti coordinator Mohan Gowda said "western culture has spoilt the present generation, where boys and girls drink, smoke and perform vulgar dance in an inebriated state which instigates criminals for eve-teasing."
Gowda recalled how some women were allegedly molested en masse two years ago bringing a bad name to the city internationally.
