The Archbishop of Kolkata Thomas D’Souza questioned the motive of the culprits in the case of the nun gangrape in West Bengal. He said that the extent of brutality seems to raise several questions.

At this point nothing can be ruled out but I don’t think it was just about a robbery. If it was, why did they have to rape her and beat the sisters?

10 people have been detained so far but no arrests have been made yet. A CID probe was ordered into the incident on Saturday after the septuagenarian was allegedly gangraped.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today went to Ranaghat to visit the nun and two other sisters who were injured.

Banerjee’s convoy was blocked by protestors for almost an hour who demanded immediate arrest of the culprits. She addressed the students and locals who surrounded her convoy and said that a political conspiracy was being hatched by CPI(M) and BJP to stop the administration from taking action.

“In the name of rally and protest, some political parties have made inroads here. They don’t want real culprits to be arrested. Missionaries are for peace. Don’t malign the movement of the missionaries,” she said.

I am waiting here. I challenge the CPI(M) and BJP. Let me see how long they can stop me by gheraoing my convoy. I am not afraid of them.

-Mamata Banerjee, West Bengal Chief Minister
