"His passing away marks the end of an era,” said Prime Minister Narendra Modi on former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee after his demise at AIIMS in New Delhi on Thursday, 16 August. He was 93.

“India grieves the demise of our beloved Atal Ji. His passing away marks the end of an era. He lived for the nation and served it assiduously for decades. My thoughts are with his family, BJP Karyakartas and millions of admirers in this hour of sadness. Om Shanti,” Modi wrote on Twitter minutes after the death of the BJP veteran.

Modi also hailed the former prime minister for his ‘exemplary leadership that set the foundations for a strong, prosperous and inclusive India in the 21st century.’

On a personal level, PM said that Vajpayee’s loss was an ‘irreplaceable loss’. “I have countless fond memories with him. He was an inspiration to Karyakartas like me.”

Congress President Rahul Gandhi also took to Twitter and expressed condolences to Vajpayee’s family and his admirers. “We will miss him,” he wrote further.

Minutes after the three-time prime minister passed away, politicians from across the political spectrum paid their tribute to him and remembered his contribution to the nation.
