On Tuesday, the National Democratic Front of Bodoland, in a press statement denied involvement in the deadly attack in the crowded market place of Assam’s Kokrajhar district.

A statement signed by the President of the NDFB, B Saoraigwra, condemned the killing of 13 civilians in the attack, alleging that the attack was a case of injustice meted out by the Assam police.

In the statement, the NDFB argued that the fact that Himanta Biswa Sarma, minister in the Assam government, and Bodoland Territorial Council Chief Hagrama Mohilary attributed the attack to the NDFB within half an hour was “suspicious.”

It explicitly stated that the NDFB thought Sarma, Mohilary “and some other party are directly or indirectly involved in the incident.”

I request all Bodo people and non-political organizations to fight against the injustice done by the Assam police and security forces. I clarify that the NDFB is not involved in this incident and ask to track down the main culprits.

The statement also alleged that it was the policy of the government and the security forces to create differences between the Bodo people.

The NDFB (Sonbijit), the faction accused in the attack, is known to choose Muslims and Adivasis as targets of their previous attacks. The Bodos have never been their target, until now, where at least six of the 13 killed in the attack on Friday were Bodos.
