BJP MP Subramanian Swamy on Wednesday, 24 October, questioned his own government’s move to send CBI Director Alok Verma on leave.

Swamy also said that attempts were being made to suspend ED officer Rajeshwar Singh in an attempt to derail the chargesheet filed against former Finance Minister P Chidambaram.

Tweeting about it, Swamy said that if so is the case, he would withdraw from all corruption cases he has filed as his own government is “hell bent on protecting them [the corrupt]”.

Earlier on Wednesday, while speaking to ANI, Swamy had said he was “surprised that an upright man like Verma has been shifted.”

“I don’t know what the charges are against the CBI director, but he is a very honest, upright man. He did excellent work as the police commissioner in Delhi, and without his involvement, Chidambaram would not have been prosecuted in the manner that he was.”

Swamy said he was concerned about the corruption investigation as it might have an adverse affect in the final stages of the Chidambaram cases.

“An impression should not go out that these people will go scot free, that accused like Chidambaram will go to court and say that the whole investigation was flawed. So, the PM has to now take steps to ensure that the corruption investigation against Chidambaram and others is not affected by this action," Swamy said.

The Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) had sent CBI Director Verma and Special Director Rakesh Asthana on leave on Wednesday. Joint Director M Nageshwar Rao has been appointed Interim Director.

Meanwhile, Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Wednesday said the decision to send Verma and Asthana on leave was an interim order to facilitate a fair probe in the case, which will be undertaken by a Special Investigation Team (SIT).
