Railway stations in India will soon have airport-like security systems where passengers will have to go through multiple checks before entering platforms, The Times of India reported on Monday, 7 January.

According to the report, Allahabad in Uttar Pradesh and Hubli in Karnataka will be the first of around 200 railway stations in the country where the new security system will be introduced.

“We are planning on using more technology. There will be limited entry and exit points for better monitoring. We will advise people to reach the station early as scanning of luggage will also take place from now on. There will, however, be no cut-off time to enter the platform, unlike at airports.”
Arun Kumar, Railway Protection Force director general, as told to The Times of India

Kumar, who reviewed security preparations at the Hubli railway station on Saturday, said the new arrangements would include real-time face recognition and random checking of passengers.

"Security arrangements have been made to segregate entry and exit points at Allahabad as the place is likely to experience a huge footfall on account of Kumbh celebrations,” Kumar said, adding that entry of people from multiple points would be checked through boundaries or fencing.

To strengthen the surveillance mechanism, Railways had approved the integrated security system (ISS) at 202 railway stations in 2016.

The blueprint of ISS includes installation of CCTV cameras, access control, personal and baggage screening system.
