A 20-year-old woman, who was on the verge of joining the Uttar Pradesh police constabulary was attacked with acid by two men riding a motorcycle. The woman sustained burns from the attack, which took place in Unchahar area of Rae Bareli district on Tuesday, 16 April morning, the Hindustan Times reported.
The woman was a third year B.Sc student at the Industrial Training Institute and was about to join the state police as a constable a few weeks later.
Vineet Singh, Circle Officer, Dalmau, who is in charge of the investigation said that the attackers were aiming for the woman's face but she managed to turn around in time, thus suffering burns on her neck, back and chest.
“She was rushed to the emergency ward of Rae Bareli district hospital and was later shifted to the intensive care unit (ICU). According to doctors, she has suffered 30 per cent burns and her condition is being monitored,” he said, according to the Hindustan Times.
An initial investigation has revealed that the woman was going to her institute on a bicycle around 9.30 am when she was intercepted by the two men.
According to some eyewitnesses, the men threw the acid on her after a short conversation, indicating that she might have known them.
However, she has not revealed their identies yet, the report said.
The woman’s brother has lodged an FIR against them under Section 326A (voluntarily causing grievous hurt by use of acid) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) at Unchahar police station, Singh told the Hindustan Times.
This is the second such incident in Uttar Pradesh in recent weeks, after a 20-year-old woman constable faced an attack by four men in Mathura on 4 April.
