The Punjab Maharashtra Cooperative (PMC) Bank crisis appears to have taken yet another life, this time of a 73 year old woman residing from Solapur, Maharashtra. Bharati Sadarangani passed away on the afternoon of Sunday, 20th October, succumbing to cardiac arrest after a conversation with her daughter, who is an account holder of the bank.

According to her son-in-law, Chandan Chotrani, Sadarangani was under immense stress as her daughter’s entire life’s savings were deposited in the bank.

Both Chandan and his wife, Hema are account holders of the PMC bank and the Chotrani’s have almost Rs 2.25 crore stuck in the bank, reported The Indian Express.

“My wife Hema had been sharing her worries with her mother, who called to check on us daily. My wife is in deep shock.”

Sadarangani’s family say that she was completely healthy with no history of any heart related disease. According to them, there was no indication from her medical history that something like this could have happened.

A resident of Mulund, Mumbai, Chotrani had booked international travel tickets just two days before the apex bank imposed its restrictions on PMC.

“I deal in import and export business. I had booked my tickets on 22 September, so my money is stuck there. I had to arrange for funds to get accommodation there as all my money is in the bank. The bank is ruining our lives.”

Sadarangani’s death is the fifth that has been reported since the bank fiasco. After the death of Sanjay Gulhati, a 51- year-old former Jet Airways employee, 3 more people had died due to health conditions.

The Indian National Congress (INC) has taken to Twitter to criticise the government’s negligence over the PMC crisis.
