16-Yr-Old Breaks Record as Youngest Indian Woman to Scale Everest

Shivangi Pathak, a 16-year-old girl from Haryana broke all records on Thursday, 17 May, by becoming the youngest Indian woman to scale the Mount Everest from the Nepal side.

Pathak, who was born in Hisar, Haryana told ANI that she had been inspired by Arunima Sinha, the first Indian amputee to scale the nearly 29,000-feet-tall peak.

Pathak’s achievement has been recognised throughout the country, and even by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who tweeted out his congratulations to the 16-year-old.

According to a report by NDTV, Pathak along with a few other climbers, had reached Kathmandu in April and began her journey to the Everest Base Camp on 6 April.

The report added that the 16-year-old had obtained courses in both basic and advance mountaineering from the Jawahar Institute of Mountain.

Before climbing the Everest, she had also participated in different high-altitude training camps in Kashmir’s glaciers.

While congratulating Pathak, the PM also tweeted out a congratulatory message to a group of climbers from the Border Security Force (BSF) who had scaled the peak, as part of the Clean Ganga Clean Himalaya campaign.

The BSF team was led by Assistant Commandant L S Dharmshaktu, reports ANI.
