A 100-year-old woman has died after being raped by a drunk youth in an Uttar Pradesh village early on Monday, police said.

The shocking incident was reported from Jaani village in Meerut district where the victim lived with her brother. The rapist, identified as Ankit Punia, 35, was reportedly in an inebriated state when he attacked the helpless woman. He had barged into her house, in a village on the outskirts of Meerut.

According to Times of India, the victim’s family stated that she was already so weak and unwell, that when the assault was taking place, she could barely muster up any sound to raise the alarm. Luckily, they heard her feeble cries and rushed to the other room, where they found Punia forcing himself on her.

Punia was trying to escape at this point, but her brother and neighbours overpowered him and handed him over to police.

Police officer PC Sharma told TOI that the appropriate punishment would be meted out to the accused. He went on to add that since the woman had died, relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) would be added in the case against the youth.

We immediately reached the spot and called an ambulance to transport the old woman to the district hospital. An FIR has been filed against Punia under IPC sections IPC 458 (house-breaking after preparation for assault) and 376 (rape).

Additionally, relevant sections of the SC/ST Act have also been slapped against the accused as the victim was a Dalit, as has IPC 302 (murder).

Punia claimed he was innocent and had not committed any crime. The family and neighbours of the victim have been seeking a death sentence for the accused.
