Days after the gang rape and murder of a 26-year-old Hyderabad veterinarian, the chief of Bengaluru Police on Monday, 2 December, assured residents of their safety.

Bengaluru Police, which have set up a separate wing for women, strengthened the helpline and improvised its mobile app 'BCP Suraksha' in the wake of the incident.

“After the Telangana rape and murder case, we assure all Bengalureans and anyone who visits the city that they will be very much safeguarded,” Bhaskar Rao, the Bengaluru's police commissioner told ANI.

“We give 100% assurance about your safety. Any call will be replied to within seven seconds. We also send SMS’,” he added.

On the intervening night of 27 and 28 November, a government-employed veterinary doctor was allegedly raped and murdered by the four men near Hyderabad. The charred body of the woman was found next morning.

‘Women to Impart Self-Defence Training’

Talking about the patrol teams, Rao said, “We have created a separate wing for women in the Central Crime Branch. Their only work is to see how to enhance the security of women in the city, to impart self-defence training for women, respond in the event of any incident and restrictions for the sale of acid.”

The wing will also take “strong action” against those who video-shoot private moments to blackmail people, he added.

“We have 220 Hoysala vehicles, dedicated to provide security to people. We are working on reducing the response time further,” said Rao.

He then appealed to people to try the number on an experimental basis to check if the police claims hold good.

Apart from this, 'BCP Suraksha' mobile application has been improvised where people can upload their information such as name, mobile number and address.

There will be another contact number of the nearest relative, who can be alerted. “It is not necessarily for women but for anyone who is in need,” Rao added.

Meanwhile. three policemen have been suspended for dereliction of duty after the woman’s family claimed that they delayed registering the FIR after their daughter went missing.

They have alleged that the police “wasted precious time” which could have been used to save her.
