Umar Khalid, Anirban Bhattacharya Surrender Amid Chants of “Azadi”

Umar Khalid and Anirban Bhattacharya, two students of the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) booked for sedition have surrendered to Delhi Police on late Wednesday night. Delhi police has taken them in custody and led them out of campus.

JNU students raised the chants of “Halla bol, Azadi” as the police escorted them out of campus. According to media reports, police was wearing civil dress.

Umar Khalid and Anirban Bhattacharya were among 5 people who were slapped with sedition charges for allegedly raising anti national slogans in JNU campus on 9 February 2016.

Umar and Anirban are being taken to the south campus police station. They will be presented before a magistrate within 24 hours.

Earlier on Wednesday, Delhi High Court had asked the students to surrender and abide by the law. The students had put a petition to surrender before High Court and asked a ‘safe passage’ from JNU campus to High Court for safety reasons.

Social media and the JNU campus erupted in protest against the charges against them.
