The Supreme Court, on Tuesday, has allowed a review peition to Mohamed Arif, sentenced to death in the 2000 Red Fort attack case.
Also known as Ashfaq, Arif’s review petition, which was dismissed earlier, will be heard in an open court.
Ashfaq was arrested on 25 December 2000. After being convicted in the case, he was sentenced to death on 31 October 2005 by a court in Delhi.
On 13 September 2007, the Delhi High Court confirmed the sessions court’s death sentence award to Ashfaq, according to a report by The Hindu.
His death sentence, was upheld in 10 August 2011 before rejecting his review petition in 28 august 2012, according to a report by The Indian Express.
Two others - Nazir Ahmed Qasid and his son Farooq Ahmed Qasid – were sentenced to life for waging war against the state, along with Ashfaq, according to reports.
In the attack, three people – two armymen and a civilian – were killed as Lashkar-e-Taiba operatives stormed the Red Fort on 22 December 2000.
