  • The Ahmedabad Court on Monday said the quantum of punishment for convicts in the Gulbarg Society massacre case will be announced on 17 June.

  • Earlier, the trial court had found 24 people guilty in the case involving the brutal massacre of 69 people, including former parliamentarian Ehsan Jafri, on 28 February 2002. Thirty-six of the 66 accused were acquitted.

  • The public prosecutor RC Kodekar asked the court for nothing less than death sentence or jail term till death for all 24 convicts.

He also informed the court during the course of hearing that those involved in the ghastly act of killing the residents of Gulbarg were either known to them or their neighbours, and not terrorists from other country.

Lawyer of the accused, Abhay Bhardwaj, refuted the demand for capital punishment or maximum punishment, saying that the incident was spontaneous and there were enough provocations for it.
