President Pranab Mukherjee, on Tuesday, signed the ordinance for a uniform medical entrance examination, NEET, under which State Boards would also be included.

“The government is in favour of NEET,” he said, adding “the private colleges, which are practicing unhealthy trends, we have to put an end to those”.

On Tuesday itself, Health Minister JP Nadda held a press conference and made clarifications on the status of the NEET exam. The highlights are as follows:-

  • After the President signed the ordinance, legal proceedings have begun and NEET has been given statutory status.

  • Several issues came up over NEET deliberations in Parliament such as the ongoing tests of various medical exams, parity of syllabus and conducting NEET in various regional languages.

  • An option has been given to various states to conduct a separate medical exam if they wished to.

  • From December 2016, postgraduate admissions will be held under NEET for the session of 2017-18.
  • Seven states have opted for NEET so far.
All state seats will be filled up either by NEET or by their state examination board and in private medical colleges, the quota that they have for states will also be filled up by the state list or NEET list. In order to provide them relief, we brought this Ordinance. The government was very clear from the beginning that it was in favour of NEET.

The ordinance on NEET, cleared by the Union Cabinet on Friday last, is aimed at “partially” overturning Supreme Court order that had also taken into account the multiple medical entrance tests by states and private colleges as well as allegations of corruption.

On Monday, the President had sought clarifications and information on a few points from the Health Minister on NEET, that had earlier sought to keep state boards out of its purview. The health minister gave the President details about different exams of state boards, syllabi and regional languages.
