Boy Drowns in Canal Due to Non-Functional Toilets
The police has booked the headmistress of the school following the incident.
An 11-year-old student of a Zilla Parishad high school in Nalgonda district of Telangana drowned after he fell into a canal while releaving himself in the open.
The police has booked the headmistress of the school under section 304A (causing death by negligence) of the IPC following the incident.
According to TelanganaToday, the boy, Vijender, was the son of a daily-wage labourer and a native of Akkavaigudem, in the outskirts of Nalgonda town.
The incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon when the boy – a student of class 6 – and a friend of his had gone out of the school to relieve themselves.
While cleaning himself, the boy lost his balance and fell into the canal. His body was recovered later.Nalgonda I Town SHO T Srinivas.
His parents and locals have bnlamed the headmistress and teachers of the school for the incident. In a complaint lodged with the police, they alleged that the students were not encouraged to use toilets on the school premises. They also said that the school made no efforts to stop them from defecating in the open, informed the officer.
Though there are two toilets for boys and girls, the toilet for boys was not in use. The boys used to go outside to relieve themselves.T Srinivas, Nalgonda Town SHO
TelanganaToday reported that members of students' union staged a dharna infront of the school with the student’s body demanding Rs 10 lakh ex-gratia and a government job for the students' kin. The unions also called for a bandh by educational institutions on Wednesday.
They withdrew from the protest demonstration after the Revenue Divisional Officer Venkata Chary assured Rs 2 lakh ex-gratia to Vijender's kin.
