The Chief Justice of India (CJI) Tirath Singh Thakur wants India to be a country where justice was “not denied, not delayed or sold to anyone,” reports The Telegraph.
While speaking at the inauguration of the centenary celebrations of the circuit court of Patna High Court in Cuttack, Justice Thakur pointed out that three crore cases were awaiting justice in the country.
Out of these, 30 lakh are in the high courts’ backlog. A total of 70,000 positions of judges need to be filled to deal with that backlog, he said. Pointing out another point of stress, Thakur said that of the 900 sanctioned positions, 450 positions of high court judges remain vacant.
Thakur had broken down in front of Prime Minister Narendra Modi while pointing out the same issues one week ago on 24 April.
