Four days after the murder of Infosys employee S Swathi, the police on Tuesday evening confirmed that they have detained two men whom they are suspecting of the crime.

Senior officers told The Times of India that they had narrowed down the search to two people and arrested both of them. The case was transferred to the city police on Monday from the Government Railway Police.

City Commissioner TK Rajendran told the reporters they will solve the case in a day or two. He said that they were close to cracking the case.

Asked about the two arrests, he said that they were questioning some people who were regularly speaking to Swathi on the phone or on social media. According to TOI, police lifted prints from these men and a few others to verify with those found on the machete recovered near Kodambakkam station on Friday.

But the police has not been able to find Swathi’s mobile phone. After the murder, it was switched on near Choolaimedu, and hours later, the phone went dead.

A police officer told TOI that the phone is the key evidence in the investigation.

The killer may try to destroy it. We searched railway tracks between Nungambakkam and Kodambakkam stations, but did not get it.

The city police is under immense pressure to solve the case after the Madras High court took suo moto cognisance of the case. The police believe the suspect had walked about 1.5 km from the railway station and later jumped a wall near the Choolaimedu high road and vanished.
