Women and Child Development Minister Maneka Gandhi has suggested a completely opposite strategy to the existing government plan to fight female foeticide – the Centre is considering lifting the two-decade old ban on sex determination of the foetus, making it mandatory, according to The Times of India. The move is aimed at making it easy to track parents indulging in female foeticide.

A proposal is under discussion in the Cabinet to evolve a system that can easily track attempts at female foeticide (by parents) instead of punishing the fraternity involved in the medical processes.

Gandhi added that many influential people have used the means of sonography to terminate the pregnancy, despite there being a ban on it.
