1. Surveillance Up As Cadres Clash in RK Nagar

Following allegations of cash distribution and clashes between cadres of political parties in RK Nagar, Chennai District Election Office and the police intensified surveillance, forming 21 additional teams for increasing the number of flying squads and static surveillance teams.

Last week, the number of teams was increased from 52 to 107. Now more teams have been formed to improve surveillance, officials said. The personnel include 51 teams of flying squad, 21 teams for static surveillance, 20 teams for video surveillance and 36 teams for manning check-posts.

2. More Post Offices to Join Aadhaar Drive

In an effort to enable more residents to enrol for Aadhaar cards, the Department of Posts is procuring biometric devices to enable the facility in post offices across the state.

At present, only 13 head post offices in the state are offering the service for want of biometric kits. However, Aadhaar details can be updated at 72 post offices.

On complaints about delay in providing the facility, officials said such complaints surfaced during the initial days of operation and the staff members are being given training regarding the Aadhaar enrolment process.

3. Report on Ockhi Loss Diled; TN to Seek Central Assistance

The Tamil Nadu government on Sunday, 17 December, decided to ask the Centre for financial assistance to rebuild infrastructure in the Ockhi-hit Kanniyakumari district and nearby areas.

The government also decided to reiterate its demand to declare Ockhi a national disaster, besides urging the Centre to set up a fishing harbour in Kanniyakumari district. It is estimated that about 15,800 electric posts and 92 transformers have been damaged due to the cyclone.

Over 98 km of the National Highway and 75 km of the state highway, besides roads under the control of local bodies in the cyclone-affected areas need to be restored.

4. Info Panel Intervenes After Court Document Goes Missing

The Tamil Nadu State Information Commission (TNSIC) has ordered the public authorities in the office of the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Ramanathapuram, to share details of action taken in a case where documents of evidence in a criminal case went missing.

P Baskaran, the petitioner, had moved the TNSIC, stating that his evidence, recorded in a criminal case at the Judicial Magistrate court, had vanished, and sought to know the action taken on the staff concerned.

5. Nathuram’s Wife Arrested

The Rajasthan police on Sunday, 17 December, arrested Manju, the wife of Nathuram, who was absconding after assaulting a police team from Chennai.

According to Deepak Bhargav, Superintendent of Police, Pali district, Rajasthan, the Jaitaran police team that was tracking Nathuram and his aides nabbed Manju, 26, from Malawas village in the Jodhpur rural limits. “Manju was in Chennai for sometime. She is wanted in many burglary cases both in Chennai and Rajasthan,” he said.

After the incident, Nathuram left her in a relative’s house from where she was arrested. Meanwhile, senior police officers in Rajasthan said that two guns, a cover and bullets had been sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory in Jaipur.

The village was under his jurisdiction till he was transferred to Korattur. However, he is still welcomed in the village as he had helped in rejuvenating an old well during his tenure.

The project motivates Sub-Inspectors to identify the problems people face in localities and then carry out the developmental work with the help of the government agencies.

7. Gang Robs Man

Four persons posed as policemen on election duty and stole nine sovereigns of jewellery from a 43-year-old man in T Nagar on Saturday, 16 December.

Lakshmanan works in a jewellery shop in Purasawalkam. He came to T Nagar to get a hallmark seal on four rings and one chain, weighing nine sovereigns. While he was riding through Mangesh Street, four men intercepted him. Lakshmanan, who realised he was cheated, lodged a complaint with the Mambalam police.
