Finally, Pakistani Religious Body Calls Honour Killing Un-Islamic

About 1,100 women were killed in the name of ‘honour’ in Pakistan last year.

  • The Conservative Council of Islamic Ideology (CII), a Pakistani religious body, on Tuesday declared that honour killing is “un-Islamic”, days after several influential clerics issued a fatwa saying the same.

  • On 12 June, 40 clerics of the Barelvi school of thought in Pakistan called honour killing “un-Islamic and unpardonable sin.”

  • It condemned recent honour killings in Lahore, Abbottabad and Murree, saying such incidents have shaken the whole society.

  • At least 1,100 women were killed in the name of ‘honour’ in Pakistan last year.

  • Earlier, the CII had come under sharp attacks after it suggested that husbands can “lightly beat wives.”
