Recording a performance better than last year on placements and breaking its own record, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Kanpur this year has seen the highest number of placements across all IITs so far.
A total of 1,045 students sat for the first round of placements this year and the placement committee has successfully managed to place 85 percent of the students in the first phase, officials from IIT-Kanpur’s placement committee told The Quint.
“We have closed the first round of placements on campus and over 900 job offers have been extended to our students. 85 percent of a total of 1,045 registered students sitting for placements have already been recruited,” Syam Nair, Chairman of placement office told The Quint.
“Going by this year’s figures, we can confirm that we have performed better than IITs across the country. Moreover, IIT-Kanpur has performed better than last year as we recorded 77 percent in December 2017,” Nair said.
Indian and International Recruiters Galore at IIT-Kanpur
The campus this year saw domestic and international recruiters. “Companies like Intel, Microsoft, Uber, Flipkart, IBM, Bajaj automobiles, Unicorn, Rubrik, Oyo, HSBC Holdings, Sterlite technologies, Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited and Jaguar marked attendance during this year’s placement season,” deputy director at IIT-Kanpur Manindra Agarwal said.
While the institute refrains from disclosing the highest package, the officials have said that this year, the average package offered to students stands at Rs 15 lakh per annum.
The recruitment drive has seen students from department of computer science and engineering, electrical engineering, mathematics and computing, design, economic sciences, mechanical engineering and chemical engineering getting placed.
90 percent of the companies are returning companies on the campus, especially from last year, Nair said.
Breaking Its Own Record of 2017
According to last year’s figures, by mid-December, IIT-Kanpur had placed 77 percent of its students — 782 students out of a total 1,015.
In a statement released in 2017, officials from IIT-Kanpur said, “The postgraduate placements have risen by 33 percent. The number of pre-placement offers (PPOs) has increased by 21 percent and the average CTC has gone up with over 100 students having received packages more than Rs. 25 lakhs.”
The second phase of placements will begin at IIT-Kanpur in mid-January next year. However, even then the institute has already surpassed its own previous year’s record.
