The online application process for admissions under the Right to Education (RTE) quota in Tamil Nadu schools will start from 22 April and end on 18 May 2019, The Times of India reported.

The online application-cum-admission portal of the Tamil Nadu school education department is also likely to have CBSE schools listed for fresh intake of around 8,000 students in academic year (2019-20), the report said.

A total of over one lakh seats are available in private matriculation schools for economically weaker sections (EWS) and socially backward groups (SBG) under the RTE act, the report said, citing official data.

All non-minority, self-financing institutions will reportedly be a part of the application portal that is expected to be launched soon, but there is no official confirmation.

According to the report, only a handful of CBSE schools were part of the portal until last year and the rest were denied admission under the RTE quota on grounds that the government hadn't reimbursed money for admissions.

The Tamil Nadu government sanctioned Rs 247 crore for admissions in 2017-18 and has so far released over Rs 400 crore towards this from 2014 to 2018, a senior official from the state education department told TOI.

However, the Centre is yet to release its share of Rs 240 crore.

According to the report, the state government had revised the admission guidelines in 2018, leading to a consequent drop in the number of admissions under the RTE quota for the first time since its introduction in 2011.
