CAT Syllabus 2019: Exam Pattern, Important Topics, Tentative Date

CAT or Common Admission Test, the most popular national level management entrance exam is expected to be conducted by Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode for admission to 20 IIMs and more than 100 B-schools across India.

CAT 2019 will be a 3-hour computer-based test consisting of 100 Multiple Choice Question (MCQ) and Non-MCQ type questions. There will be three sections, namely Quantitative Ability (QA), Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension (VARC) and Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning (DILR).

The candidates looking forward to taking admission in the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) need to be familiar with the syllabus of CAT 2019. A tentative syllabus has been defined by the experts, depending on the previous years’ question papers. The candidates can prepare for the examination based on these questions, sections and the topics.

According to marking scheme of CAT 2019, three marks will be awarded for the correct answer while one mark will be deducted for every incorrect answer. However, no mark will be deducted if the candidate does not attempt any question.

  • Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning (DI & LR)- 34 questions

Duration for each section will be 60 minutes.

Verbal Ability & Reading Comprehension (VARC):

This section will consist of questions to test knowledge around correction of sentences, usage of words as well as English grammar. The candidates will have to answer the questions based on the given passages. Topics included are:

  • Meaning-Usage Match
  • Verbal reasoning
  • Facts-Inferences-Judgments
  • Cloze Passage
  • Synonyms
  • Antonyms
  • Jumbled Paragraph
  • Summary Questions

Quantitative Aptitude (QA)

This section comprises of middle level school mathematics questions. The topics included in this section are-

  • Arithmetic
  • Algebra
  • Number System
  • Modern Mathematics
  • Higher Maths
  • Geometry
  • Mensuration
  • Trigonometry

Sub-topics for Quantitative Aptitude include:

CAT 2019 Tentative Dates:

CAT 2019 Exam: Last week of November in two slots – Forenoon (9 AM to 12 PM) and Afternoon (2:30 PM to 5:30 PM).

CAT 2019 Results: First week of January, and the selection procedure initiates with the release of CAT cutoff.

Each of the participating institutes of CAT 2019 will execute their individual admission process, however, the shortlisting would be done based on CAT 2019 cutoff. Next, the shortlisted candidates will be called for further selection rounds, namely, Group Discussion (GD) or Writing Ability Test (WAT) or both and Personal Interview (PI) rounds for the final admission.
