You can no longer take your own sweet time to sail through the doors of the Delhi Metro. Why? Because, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation has decided to cut down the waiting time on all the six lines.

But this also means that the overall waiting time will be shorter. Passengers will now wait for 2.08 minutes instead of the earlier 2.38 minutes in peak hours.

Speaking to Hindustan Times, a DMRC official elaborated, saying,

Another thing that we have done is that we have instructed the driver to control the opening and closing of metro doors manually. Initially, doors used to be open for 30 seconds but it is now controlled manually. If there is not much crowd at a station, doors would be closed in five seconds while at some crowded stations, it could take more than 30 seconds. With this, we have managed to reduce the travel time between two stations.

Further, the DMRC is also planning to run 244 trains, as opposed to the earlier 220 trains. The DMRC is also planning on improving overall customer experience as well. This means that there will also be an increase in the total number of coaches plying from one end of the city to another. The DMRC will be adding over 200 coaches to the existing fleet, said the HT report.

Efforts have also been made to ensure an increase in the average speed of trains.

This has been done by the rationalisation of the ‘dwell time’ at the stations and reducing the run time between two stations. With these efforts, the DMRC was able to increase the average speed of trains on one of the busiest line from 33 kmph to 35 kmph. Improved speed has reduced travel time

The Delhi Metro currently operates across six corridors and will venture into two more corridors under Phase 3.
