Meat sellers across Uttar Pradesh will go on an indefinite strike from Monday, against the crackdown on illegal and mechanised slaughterhouses. “The government must allow renewal of existing licenses,” said one of the meat sellers at the protest.

Under pressure, UP government issued a hasty clarification. During Question Hour in the Lok Sabha, Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi said the export of buffalo meat had gone down, and China was not allowing the import of Indian buffalo meat.

Leaders from the Opposition spoke up against the crackdown. Congress leader Renuka Chaudhary said, “Can we let the children of meat sellers perish?. Zoo animals cannot be kept on a vegetarian diet.”
