Patients at Delhi’s AIIMS have been greeted by a strange sight: Doctors attending to them wearing helmets.

The move by the doctors is aimed at showing solidarity with their colleagues in Maharashtra, who are protesting against alleged frequent attacks on them while on duty.

On Wednesday, nearly 40,000 doctors in Maharashtra went on an indefinite strike over an alleged lack of security for them in government hospitals.

The 40,000-odd doctors, all members of the Maharashtra chapter of the Indian Medical Association, decided to shun work and join over 4,500 resident doctors in the state who have been staying away from duty for the last three days.

Meanwhile, at AIIMS on Wednesday, around 1,200 resident doctors turned up on duty wearing helmets to express solidarity with their counterparts in Maharashtra.

"Nobody bothers about resident doctors who were brutally beaten up. Instead of providing security to resident doctors at their workplace, the Maharashtra government is threatening to deduct their salaries and throw them out of their hostels," president of AIIMS’ Resident Doctors' Association Dr Vijay Gurjar said.
