Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched an attack on Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi during his Lok Sabha address on Tuesday.

During the Winter session of Parliament, Gandhi had said that an earthquake would strike if he was given the opportunity to speak. Mocking Gandhi, PM Modi referred to Monday’s earthquake that shook north India and said that the quake had finally “hit” the region, months after Gandhi’s “threat”.

“Democracy within the Congress has been hijacked,” PM Modi said.

“No Seva in Scam”

The PM also responded to the Congress VP’s interpretation of “SCAM” – an acronym that Modi coined to refer to Samajwadi, Congress, Akhikesh, Mayawati. Gandhi had earlier said that SCAM stood for “Service, Courage, Ability and Modesty”.

How can someone see ‘seva’ or any positive virtue in the word scam, Modi asked.

Let us understand and appreciate the inherent strength of our people and take India to newer heights. Faith in Jan Shakti will give results... It is due to this Jan Shakti that the son of a poor mother can become the Prime Minister of India.

Targeting the Congress, he said: “They think that India got its Independence only because of one family’s efforts. Have you ever heard them ever speak of Bhagat Singh or Azad?”

There are many people like me, who couldn’t die for our nation during the freedom struggle but we are living for India and serving India.

“Demonetisation is Like Swachh Bharat”

PM Modi said that the government was open to discussions on the issue of demonetisation but alleged that the Opposition was more concerned about remaining in the news.

The note ban call, he said, is like “Swachh Bharat” which will rid India of corruption and black money.

When can you have an operation? It is when a body is healthy. Our economy was doing well and thus our decision (of demonetisation) was taken at the right time... Now, middlemen no longer enjoy the benefits they did after we stopped the corruption and loot.

Modi alleged that the Opposition was obsessed with demonetisation. “The surgical strikes following the Uri attack were a big decision but no one had questioned it as much as the note ban,” he said.
