Alleged Stripping of Tanzanian Woman Had an Element of Racism: Tanzania’s High Commissioner to India

Expressing outrage at the incident where a 21-year-old Tanzanian student was allegedly stripped in Bengaluru, Tanzania’s High Commissioner to India, John Kijazi said on Thursday that the incident had an “element of racism”. He also said that the woman was attacked because “she was black”, reports The Indian Express.

The Tanzanian envoy will be visiting Bengaluru on Friday, along with a team of officials from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), to reach out to African students in Bengaluru and “assuage their concerns”.

Kijazi also sought a “thorough and fair investigation” into the incident.

We want to ensure the security and safety of all African students. If they are scared, they cannot study. Right now, they are not 100 percent comfortable.
John Kijazi, Tanzania’s High Commissioner to India told The Indian Express

Meanwhile, the Centre has sought a “detailed report” from the Karnataka government on the alleged stripping.

The Congress government in the state, however, sought to play down the incident with Home Minister G Parameshwara denying that the student was not stripped and paraded naked as alleged.

The new temple was inaugurated on Thursday, kicking off a 10-day ritual for the statues of Dadua, his wife Siya Devi, father Ram Pyare Singh and mother Krishna Devi to be unveiled next weekend. The idols are currently being sculpted in Jaipur.
