India is celebrating Mahavir Jayanti, the birth anniversary of Lord Mahavir on Wednesday, 17 April, this year. The festival is popular among Jains who take out processions or rath yatras to commemorate the day.
According to Jain scriptures, Lord Mahaveer was born on the 13th day of the Chaitra month, and was named 'Vardhamana'.
On this day, members of the Jain community offer prayers, recite stavans (religious rhymes) and perform ‘Mahaveer Abhisheka’, seeking the Lord’s blessings for a happy and healthy life.
Spiritual gatherings are also organised in temples wherein monks and nuns deliver lectures on the importance of following the path of virtue as defined in Jainism.
