You’re great at convincing your boss why you reached office late. You’re an expert at getting friends to tag along to watch films they don’t want to. But try calming a restless child, especially when you want to take him along to a family function or a get-together and see how far you succeed. The only people to have mastered this art are parents.

Kids can be very stubborn. Tell them that they have to come for a function and they will invariably play the ‘I’ll get bored’ and ‘What will I do there?’ cards.

Picture this: You’ve just received the invitation for your cousin’s three-day long Bollywood-themed wedding. You have to take your eight-year-old with you and though it’s a month away, you’ve already started to summon all your ‘pacifying’ skills because you’ll soon have to put them to use.

Now what are family weddings without the preceding shopping sprees? You’ve already started picking up stuff, but have zeroed in on a Saturday for all the major shopping. Understandably, you have to take your kiddo along, very well knowing that he doesn’t enjoy shopping trips. So this time you’ve decided to make him the ‘boss’. He’ll be the one handing over the credit card at the counter and punching in the pin each time you buy something. This is something that you have got him to do in the past as well, and he finds it amusing. This time too, it works.

As luck would have it, some urgent office work comes up that very Saturday. You now have to head to office for an hour or two and then go shopping. “You come with me to office this time and the next time, I promise I will take you to watch your favourite movie,” you tell him and he is happy to tag along, probably also excited at the thought of fidgeting with your office stationery.

Finally, the big day is here. The wedding is happening at your cousin’s farm house that is a good three hours from your place. You are already dreading the drive because you know he gets restless and bored. Now that’s a deadly combination. Luckily, there’s always car antakshari for situations like this.

After all this, you still have the three-day long wedding, during which you have to keep him occupied. Phew, someone give parents a medal already.
