The 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) is set to resume on Saturday, 17 May, with the remaining 17 matches being played across six venues, the Board of Control for Cricket in India confirmed on 12 May. In a release, the BCCI has announced the dates, timings and venues of the remaining fixtures of the competition, which had to be suspended on 9 May owing to the escalating tensions between India and Pakistan.

On 8 May, IPL came to a standstill when the match between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals — held in Himachal Pradesh’s Dharamshala — had to be abandoned after 10.1 overs because of security concerns.

That fixture will have a fresh start in Jaipur — one of the six venues chosen for the remaining matches — with the other five venues being Bengaluru, Delhi, Lucknow, Ahmedabad and Mumbai.

With this development, it has been confirmed that two venues — Dharamshala and Chennai — have already hosted their respective last match of IPL 2025.

For the playoffs, Hyderabad and Kolkata were the originally designated venues. While the BCCI has stated a decision pertaining to the playoff venues will be communicated later, Sunrisers Hyderabad’s remaining home fixture — against Kolkata Knight Riders — has been shifted to Delhi.

Question Mark on Foreigners' Availability

The immediate challenge faced by the franchises will be ensuring the availability of full-strength squads, with the delay expected to result in a few early departures.

On the day of Qualifier 1 (29 May), England will commence their three-match ODI series against the West Indies. The latter have already named their squad, with three of their players currently representing their IPL franchises and two being from teams almost guaranteed to make it to the playoffs:

  • Romario Shepherd (Royal Challengers Bengaluru)

  • Sherfane Rutherford (Gujarat Titans)

  • Shamar Joseph (Lucknow Super Giants)

England are yet to announce their squad, although their last ODI squad featured key IPL figures in the likes of Jos Buttler, Jofra Archer and Phil Salt.

Moreover, with the 2025 ICC World Test Championship final to begin on 11 June in Lord's, there is still no clarity on the availability of Australian and South African players.
