Vikas Barala, son of Haryana BJP chief Subhash Barala and accused in the high profile Chandigarh stalking case, has been denied bail. A Chandigarh District court, headed by Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Barjinder Pal Singh, dismissed his bail plea on Tuesday afternoon.

Both Barala and his friend and co-accused Ashish Kumar will remain in jail. They will now have to wait to file a fresh appeal in a higher court.

Barala and his friend were accused of stalking and wrongfully detaining radio jockey Varnika Kundu, the daughter of a former IAS officer, late at night on a Chandigarh street.

The Chandigarh police came under criticism over reports that Barala had been arrested but then immediately released on bail.

Speaking exclusively to The Quint, Kundu said she was glad the bail application was rejected.

Barala’s bail plea was initially expected to come up for hearing in court on Monday, 28 August. The Chandigarh police, however, sought a day’s extension to give their reply in light of a security high alert over the Gurmeet Ram Rahim sentencing.
